1987 - Eagle House, 86–96 Cannon Street, EC4

We were working in the basement of 'Eagle House', the former MAFF building on Cannon Street, pre-demolition.

Although the site was within the scheduled area of the Governor's Palace, it was almost entirely truncated by the basements. Just a few wall footings survived cut into natural. I remember there were some large square pits or shafts which we couldn't bottom for safety reasons. The finds from these were Roman. At the time we wondered if they were well shafts and after the Gresham Street finds I now think that's highly likely!

Back in the day, when smoking and drinking were permitted! From L to R: Dominic (a student from Stuttgart); [can't remember who it is behind Dom - any ideas?]; Martin Watts; Mark Hinman. The 18th-century finds were from a rather nice post-med well (see photo 8) which we reckoned had been backfilled with stuff from the clearance of an inn!
